Federal Funds Restoring Orthodox Churches in Northern Russia
The regional government has requested federal funds to help restore historic churches in the Yaroslavl region
The Yaroslavl region is home for me and my family, and for several Christian families who left America and moved to Russia over the past few years. This region is a short drive north of Moscow, and is home to several beautiful towns in the Golden Ring, including Pereslavl Zalessky and Rostov the Great.
Russia’s Parliament Gazette just reported that the Yaroslavl govt is requesting federal funds from Moscow, to help restore historic Orthodox churches located in the Yaroslavl region. Here’s the news report in English:
In the Yaroslavl region, federal support is needed so that these historic sites won’t be lost:
The Church of John the Baptist in the village of Tolchkov
The bell tower of the Church of St. Nicholas the Martyr in the village of Porechye-Rybnoye
The Church of Peter and Paul in Yaroslavl
The Church of Peter the Metropolitan in Pereslavl-Zalessky
Representatives of the subject spoke about this at an extended meeting of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education, and Culture on March 18…
Many tourists coming to Yaroslavl would like to see the Church of John the Baptist with their own eyes, especially because its image is still featured on Russia’s 1000-Ruble banknote. Since 2023, by decision of the Bank of Russia, images of Nizhny Novgorod monuments will be printed on new banknotes, instead of Yaroslavl monuments. And in the near future, regional authorties warned, this church may disappear not only from the banknotes, but also from the face of the earth.
Anna Rozhkova, director of the department for the protection of cultural heritage sites in the region, told the Federation Council that in addition to the Church of John the Baptist in Tolchkovo, the bell tower of the Church of St. Nicholas the Martyr in Porechye-Rybnoye, the Church of Peter and Paul in Yaroslavl, and the Church of Metropolitan Peter in Pereslavl-Zalessky are of particular concern to local authorities.
“Without federal support, these cultural sites may be lost,” the expert warned. “In this regard, we ask that these objects be included in the state program for the development of culture with the necessary funds allocated for comprehensive reconstruction.” The issue will be discussed at the next plenary meeting of the Federation Council.
As pointed out by Tatyana Potemkina, deputy chairman of the Yaroslavl government, there are now more than five thousand cultural heritage sites in the region, of which a thousand are under federal protection. In terms of the number of such attractions, the region is on a par with Moscow and St. Petersburg. Potemkina also recalled that Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg are the only two Russian cities that have historical centers protected by UNESCO.
