Russia Changing Laws for Foreign Drivers in 2024
For foreigners driving a car in Russia, important new changes are on the horizon
Foreigners with Russian Residency Will Need to Acquire a Russian Driver License
In 2024, some drivers will have to get their license again. This will happen on April 1, when changes to the Federal Law “On Road Safety” regarding certain foreign national and international driver’s licenses come into force.
In particular, documents will be declared invalid if:
a year has passed since the foreign citizen acquired a residence permit in Russia or Russian citizenship,
A year has passed since the return of a Russian citizen to his homeland, after having received an international driving license in another country.
You will be given exactly one year to replace the documents; if you do not meet the deadline, fines from five to 15 thousand rubles will follow. At the same time, there is an important nuance: the new rules will not apply to holders of certificates issued in Belarus, as well as to citizens of Belarus who have received a residence permit in Russia.
