I had no idea Peter used the word crap, but it reminds me of my father when he gets heated. "These democrats are all so full of crap".

Its delightfully evocative and cannot be misconstrued.

I agree no sort of translation should aim to get rid of this fact. At the same time my sensibilities prefer the word refuse. And despite it being used, it is only used once. Much like Jesus was only violent (zeal for his fathers house) once.

A matter that to this day fills me with contemplation.

For me the distinction is clear. Some words are foul in that their purpose is to offend. And the soul *knows* this.

Others are less so. And it's fine to agree on these words for the purpose of having them be offensive. But their radioactive quality is a function of how well we strive to quarantine them.

Let me put it in radical terms. If all the world was Satanist would it be bad? Yes. But would it be so normal that no one would ever know what good is? Also yes. The dissolution of good and evil is necessary for evil to become normal. Even if evil remains still evil.

I think swear words being wrong is self evident to the soul. It robs peace. Reason barging in or demanding evidence is sort of just playing with the demons. A soul without peace naturally won't feel its loss with each swear. If there is no good or evil, there is no meaningful categorization of swear to non swear.

I gave up cursing as well for lent. I have failed a few times but, for each of the times I did swear, it was far more impactful to conscience than prior and my spirit feels enlivened because of my abstinence.

On days where I used to curse a lot. My brain would feel duller and my soul dirty. At the end there was the clear sense that I failed somehow.

There is also the matter of cognitive reframing. Cursing is so easy. But when I have to find words, suddenly I am articulate. I can express my displeasure cleanly. And it feels good, though a bit tedious at first.

It forces the impulse of thought to go through the full cognitive architecture. It takes the bite away and often, forces me to face my motives more square.

Last, I don't look at crap as a curse word. It's more like half way curse word if I had to place it. Its the most base of non curse words. A person can obviously use any word as a curse word if it contains negative value. And sarcasm can even turn positive words into negative words for this purpose. So I see your point with the hermeneutical quagmire.

So if we separate curse from specifically malicious intent. We have to ask are descriptors like crap actual curse words? Maybe, maybe not. It's like taking a slice of life. You get how far the word has progressed into becoming a curse. Then the context.

I can curse a car or a house or a person. Why not a word. People who interact with cursed objects get cursed. Cursed prayers ect directly constitute grave offense. What about a cursed word? How does a word obtain this animus?

In the end it comes down to the intent. It cannot be separated except that words are innocent until enough people have used them for cursing. Then they obtain that spiritual character. And come to reference that spiritual effect.

As an individual this makes no sense but as a collective before God it would seem to me self evident. A sort of backward golden calf. No matter how we phonetically fashion the swear cow, he is made of malicious intent. Eventually his image (a word) becomes self referential to intent.

Words like the f word and the c word have no other purpose however than to be offensive today. The origin of their meaning is in the offense they can bring. In that way they are imbued with the spiritual meaning of the opposite of a blessing. Even if it is just on the air and not directed to any person.

Funnily they are specifically used by the enemies of the church for that reason when used politically. Think of the obscene feminists or marxist leftists. They are masters of inventing curses.

I think as well given my own spiritual experiences, cursing does not elevate the soul above the animal body. It would obviously be inappropriate to do in mass. Just like it is obvious that dressing scantily in mass is inappropriate. Even if your relative ugliness means no one actually lusts.

Sin is missing the mark so clearly there is a time when cursing is violently sinful and times when it is far less so. When you stub your toe on a door, the mark is obviously much lower.

Since we are made to be in union with God all the time (christ is the model) we would have to give up cursing to accomplish that. This being said it is not as though many people are near enough to this loving union that cursing is their main fault. For most men it's porn, fornication and masturbation. Venal sin can be tolerated. Mortal sin cannot be.

As an aside, my father said when he was younger his father said he would be a garbage collector when he grew up because he despised academics. My father is a brilliant artist, and has made a fantastic living in advertising.

Not one swear was uttered but that oracle was certainly filthy. Literally regarding garbage.

Lastly the existence of cursed words implies the existence of blessed words. Which fills my mind with joy.
